KATERN is a (maga)zine for space-lovers.
With KATERN, we want to invite you to enter where you come every day, and yet have never been.
How do we live together in this vast complex of space and time? That is our question.
For each issue, we move to a different location with a changing team of writers, artists, storytellers, and surveyors of all kinds. We show you very different ways of looking at space.

KATERN #2 is out! Topic this edition is the ‘edge of the sea’.
It is about the moving edges that demarcate our environment. About the enigma of the complex we live in.
How do you explore the edge of the sea?
On a raft, called ‘the Katern #2’.
Our raft consists not, as one might expect, of beams and boards, but of paper made seaworthy with elements of visual art, poetry, architecture, with ship stories, bottles with and without messages or other floating material. We had meetings with writers and artists in different parts of the world, because the sea is everywhere. Thanks to Babs-Lab (Barbara Van den Broeck), who made a print of the sea in porcelain for this issue. An original particle is included with each copy of Katern #2. As all water is part of the sea.
For KATERN #1, we walked through the empty factory halls of Meurop, on a mild summer evening that smelt of chrome baths.
Meurop was the Belgian forerunner of Ikea in the 1950s. An abandoned dream factory of stainless steel and plastic. We snuck in.
Editorial team for the first issue was Peter Holvoet-Hanssen, Veerle Bueds and Elisabeth Elegeert.
An overview of all the artworks we collected along the way will be exhibited after KATERN #4, spring 2025.
Katern is published in 80 copies with support from the Flemish community.
Printing is on an uncoated natural paper with no added whiteners. Cradle to Cradle Certified®
